Description of the work Attractive oil on canvas by the Catalan painter Antonio Sala Herrero (1926–2012), known for his Mediterranean landscapes, especially his depictions of the Costa Brava and the coastal towns of Catalonia. The composition represents a littoral landscape dominated by large rock formations occupying the foreground, while in the distance a small stretch of sea and a vegetation-covered elevation can be discerned. The painting stands out for its broad, vigorous, and impasto brushwork, as well as for the use of a palette of whites, pinks, violets, and ochers, contrasted with the greens and blues of the landscape. The interpretation of the rocks, built up with brushstrokes of marked direction and chromatic contrasts, gives the scene notable plastic strength and a sense of movement. Style, context, and influences The work constitutes an interesting example of Catalan landscape painting with a post-Impressionist tradition, a current that had important continuity throughout the 20th century and found in Mediterranean landscapes one of its main sources of inspiration. Sala Herrero’s painting is characterized by a personal interpretation of the landscape, in which color and the painting’s materiality acquire fundamental importance. In this composition, affinities with the tradition of French Post-Impressionism can be seen, especially in the construction of volume through chromatic planes and the use of a visible and expressive brushstroke. Moreover, the work participates in the sensibility of modern Catalan landscape painting, which developed a luminous and coloristic view of the Mediterranean environment. The treatment of the rock formations recalls certain approaches of Paul Cézanne, particularly in the structural organization of volumes, while the intensity of some chromatic contrasts evokes the expressive freedom of Fauvist painting. Thus, the composition combines a solid figurative structure with a free and modern interpretation of the landscape, giving special prominence to the material qualities of the painting. About Antonio Sala Herrero (1926–2012) Antonio Sala Herrero was a Catalan painter born in Barcelona, whose artistic career was closely linked to the Mediterranean landscape. Primarily self-taught, he showed from an early age a special inclination towards drawing and painting. In 1967 he held his first solo exhibition at the Sala Municipal de Figueres, beginning a career that would develop mainly in Catalonia. Throughout his career he presented his works in various galleries and exhibition spaces, including La Pinacoteca de Barcelona and other establishments devoted to the diffusion of contemporary figurative painting. In 1969 he received the Vila de Palamós Award, a recognition linked to his activity as a landscape painter. His artistic production focused especially on representations of the Costa Brava, Cadaqués, Palamós, and other coastal spots in Catalonia, though he also cultivated other pictorial genres. His artistic language is distinguished by the use of a loose brushstroke, a luminous palette, and a personal interpretation of nature, placing him within the continuity of Catalan post-Impressionist landscape painting of the 20th century. Conservation The work is presented unframed, as shown in the photographs. The conservation state is that which is seen in the images, which form an integral part of the description.
