His love for art and literature was evident early on. During a long recovery from a lung disease, Tàpies began to paint and draw. In 1944 he began law studies, which he abandoned in 1946 to devote himself permanently to art. The early paintings by Antoni Tàpies initially followed the works of artists such as Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee, and Joan Miró. After a surrealist and dadaist phase, his works became increasingly abstract. In 1947, with the painting "Zoom," a programmatic work for his later oeuvre emerged. In 1948 he co-founded the artists’ group “Dau al Set,” of which he became the most important representative. In 1950 Antoni Tàpies received a scholarship from the French government, enabling him to stay in Paris. Also in 1950, Barcelona hosted his first solo exhibition. In 1951 Tàpies undertook trips to Belgium and the Netherlands. In 1953 he spent a short time in New York, where an exhibition of his works took place. In 1958 he participated in the Venice Biennale and gained international recognition. He was represented at the documenta in Kassel in 1959, 1964, 1968 and 1977. Antoni Tàpies was regarded as the most important representative of Spanish Informalism. He mixed sand, cement, marble dust, glue into his paintings. He scratched away paint and reapplied it until the surface resembled cracked masonry. Tàpies engaged deeply with Eastern philosophies throughout his life. In his search for expression, he integrated individual letters, signs, crosses, and sometimes objects or garments. Antoni Tàpies’s material and wall works appear mysterious and meditative. He himself did not describe himself as an abstract artist, but as a realist who sought to make reality comprehensible in his works. In 1984 he founded the Fundació Antoni Tàpies in Barcelona. The artist passed away on 6 February 2012 in Barcelona. About the artwork: Roland Garros is the traditional home of the annual Internationaux de France; the tennis tournament is worldwide better known as the French Open. This is one of the official posters that were designed and created each year for the tennis tournament at Roland Garros.
