Antonio Marzotto (XX) - Penisola Sorrentina

The painting depicts a suggestive and classic coastal view of the Sorrento Peninsula or the Amalfi Coast (recognizable by the profile of the mountains jutting into the sea and by the typical maritime village in the background). The composition combines elements of the Italian landscape tradition of the twentieth century with genre scenes, such as the passage of the characteristic horse-drawn carriage in the foreground. The signature at the bottom right, shown in detail in the second photo, reveals the hand of the master Antonio Marzotto. The Author: Antonio Marzotto Antonio Marzotto was an Italian painter active during the twentieth century, known especially for his seascapes, the coastal landscapes of Campania, the canals of Venice and lake views. • Style: His approach draws on post-impressionist painting and the tradition of Italian vedutisti of the first half of the twentieth century. He uses a textured application of color, at times dense and spatulated (visible especially in the vegetation and on the rocky face of the mountains), while maintaining careful rendering of atmospheric light and the reflections on the water. • Recurring subjects: Marzotto liked to include elements of daily life or era in his views to confer dynamism and a sense of romantic nostalgia to the scenes (such as the small details of sailing boats on the horizon and the carriage on the path).
