Medusa Artist: Antonio Sciacca Year: 1999 Technique: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 70 cm x 50 cm An Explosion of Force Outside the Normal This 1999 work represents one of the summits of Antonio Sciacca's expressive research. Inspired by Caravaggio's famous disk, Sciacca's "Medusa" is not a simple quotation, but a visceral reinterpretation that conveys an extraordinary force. The painting captures the supreme instant of the beheading: the Gorgon’s face erupts in a silent scream, with eyes and mouth wide open in a paroxysm of surprise and terror that overwhelms the viewer with a compelling emotional impact. The work is a true triumph of color and matter: Sciacca abandons the dark tones of the past to embrace a vibrant palette. The intense yellows of the face, the deep blues of the backgrounds, and the bright reds of the blood create a violent and magnetic contrast. It is an explosion of color that amplifies the tragedy of the mythical moment. The artist’s mark is vigorous, almost carved on the canvas. The brushstrokes are thick, tactile, and charged with energy, giving the serpents that compose the mane a disturbing, twitching vitality. Sciacca’s technical mastery emerges in the ability to render visible the graphic structure of the drawing beneath the color, allowing the viewer to appreciate the anatomical rigor fused with the expressive freedom of gesture. Beyond the horror, the Medusa’s head preserves its allegorical value of wisdom and prudence (concepts dear to the Medicean tradition), here reinterpreted with a modern and exuberant sensibility. Displayed in prestigious international exhibitions and praised by global critics, this 1999 work stands out for its ability to honor the painting tradition while projecting it into a disruptive contemporary dimension. Given its execution quality and the subject’s relevance, the work represents a safe and highly prestigious investment. The painting will be shipped with professional packing, tracked and insured, to ensure the maximum protection of this masterpiece.
