ARMOR Melanesia, Papua New Guinea Conus H. 16 cm - W. 10 Provenance: - Harry Beran Collection A large armband belonging to a prominent figure, carved and polished from a very large Conus shell. This type of ancient arm ornament, with its marvelous patina, is found both in the Bamu River region in the western part of the Gulf of Papua—where it is known as a “wauri”— as well as in the Massim region, where it may be associated with the extraordinary conus shells engraved with birds and fish found as far as Collingwood Bay, which are believed to be linked to archaic kula exchanges.
