Arnold & Dent, London - fine 18ct pocket chronometer, No 5160, London 1839, signed gilt movement with split bimetallic balance, helical hairspring, diamond endstone, Earnshaw spring detent escapement, signed white Roman numeral dial with outer minute track, subsidiary seconds dial and gold hands, the consular case numbered 5160 and inscribed to the inner case 'Commander Alexr. Milne H.M.S Snake from his father Admiral Sir David Milne KCB 1838', the case reverse engraved with a the crest of Milne, case maker 'HH', 166gm, 55mm; within a mahogany deck box, 4.25" x 3.75 ** Formerly the property of Captain A.J.F Milne-Home, R.N ** Sold with the rating certificate dated 18th January 1860, with a manuscript note on the reverse how the present chronometer watch was ordered in 1838 to replace a chronometer by Viner which had been stolen in 1837 at Port Royal Jamaica, which the owner successfully recovered when it was bought in for repair to Viners by Capt, Revett of the West Indies Mail Steamer, who had bought if for £10.
