Silver 835 mesh handbag, GVK brand, Germany, 1910s–1920s Elegant mesh purse crafted in 835 sterling silver, as confirmed by the '835' hallmark visible on the mount next to the manufacturer’s mark 'GVK' inscribed within a triangular shield. This type of fine coin purses and clutch bags, known as 'mesh purses' or silver mesh handbags, were very popular in the late Edwardian period and early Art Deco era, with production dating to around the 1910s–1920s. The hallmarking system with the 835 assay and the maker’s mark in a triangular shield is characteristic of German silverware of the period, clearly pointing to a German origin. The piece is constructed with a fine mesh of silver woven from tiny linked loops, flawless, giving it a flexible, silky drape. It is in perfect condition, complete, with no mesh breaks, with the 835 silver chain also intact and the interior silk lining untouched (extremely rare). The lower edge is finished with small spherical charms that add movement and weight to the mesh. The upper mount features a rectangular frame with hammered decoration (hammered effect) and a kiss-lock clasp with two oval end caps acting as pushers. The interior is lined with light-colored silk. Overall condition excellent for its age, with natural silver patina appropriate to the period. The mesh remains intact and flexible, with no breaks, all 835 silver weight tassels present, and the 835 silver chain intact. The kiss-lock functions correctly and the chain is complete. The lower spherical end caps are preserved. Silver mesh bags from this period are highly valued by collectors of vintage accessories and silverware, as well as for decorative and vintage fashion value. The presence of the 835 assay mark next to the maker’s mark 'GVK' in a triangular shield reinforces its authenticity and traceability. They stand as a testament to the refinement of women’s fashion in the early 20th century and the high quality of German metalwork of the era.
