Artful Brooch With Blue & Yellow Sapphire in Gold, 1930s

Sapphires are not always blue: as early as past centuries, green sapphires were known and referred to as “oriental emeralds”, while violet-coloured sapphires were called “oriental amethysts”. These gemstones also occur in shades of yellow, pink, or peach. This brooch brings together two natural sapphires of differing colours. One of the stones displays a soft, delicate blue with a subtle violet hue. The other exhibits a cool, pastel yellow reminiscent of citrus fruits. They are set in an intricately crafted gold mount, encircled by leaves and tendrils. Small brilliant-cut diamonds sparkle between them like dewdrops. The brooch’s bold, organic design language was popular in Germany from the late 1910s through to the 1950s, particularly among artist-goldsmiths. We date this well-preserved piece to the 1930s. It is accompanied by an independent gemmological report confirming the quality of the materials used.
