Circa 1880, 18 x 25 cm. "Type Kabyles, Algeria", very fine albumen print from the period, in very good condition with preserved contrasts, gray tones and levels of detail from Very Good to Superb, attributed to Jean Geiser. The appeal of this print is that it is not mounted on an album page or stiff cardboard, which is rare. Labeled at the bottom left of the print, in the negative. Rare subject, not posed, in action. Deserves framing. Will be shipped with its neutral pH sleeve (ideal for a collection kept in good condition). Jean Geiser (1848-1923) is one of the most important photographers of colonial Algeria at the end of the 19th century. Of Swiss origin, he settled in Algiers around 1873 and founded a photographic studio there that quickly became one of the most renowned in North Africa. His work is part of the orientalists’ photography tradition. He produced thousands of images for travelers, settlers and European collectors: city views, landscapes, street scenes, portraits of inhabitants and studio compositions featuring dancers, musicians or figures in exotic costume.
