Attributed to William Walker Morris (1832-1881) - Jóvenes músicos tiroleses

Splendid genre painting in oil on canvas, created in the mid-19th century, signed visibly and dated in the lower left corner by the British painter William Walker Morris in the year 1852. The work, of magnificent technical craft and excellent academic level, captures two children in folk costumes from the Alpine regions or continental Europe (a highly coveted and appreciated theme by Romantic and genre painters of the 19th century). One of the youths wears a shearling vest and a felt hat adorned with plumes, while the younger one appears focused on playing a wooden caramillo or fife. The meticulousness in the detail of the textures of the clothing, the light treatment, and the expressive faces testify to the high quality of the piece. Analysis of the Signature and Age: The handwritten inscription reads clearly “William Morris 1852.” By analyzing the surface of the canvas, the absolute authenticity of the signature is confirmed, since the natural craquelure pattern of the oil passes uniformly over the strokes of the letters, certifying that the signature was made at the moment of creation more than 170 years ago. Provenance and History: The back of the painting preserves the original canvas mounted on its period wooden stretcher. A notable old handwritten number in gold reads “Nº 2540,” which unequivocally corresponds to the inventory codes typical of art galleries or prestigious international auction houses of the nineteenth century, a detail of great value that supports its historical provenance. The Frame: The painting is presented protected by its superb original period frame, carved and gilded with gold leaf, which features an elegant natural perimetral crackling that enhances its character and historical age. Technical Details: Technique: Oil on canvas Date / Period: Year 1852 (19th Century) Condition: Very good overall. The canvas is stretched and stable on its original frame. The gilded frame shows the mild and logical signs of the passage of time that attest to its indisputable age. Dimensions with frame: 65 x 60 cm Dimensions without frame (canvas only): 54 x 38 cm An ideal piece for both 19th-century genre painting collectors and investors in classical art seeking a work fully documented, signed and dated in its era.
