Autumn Among the Birches - Gary Westall

Autumn Among the Birches by Gary Westall Painting 15.8 x 19.7 :: I painted this picture based on a photo by Rob Guetre. I was particularly drawn to it because of its clear autumnal atmosphere. The scene reminded me of my own impressions of the Weserbergland region and I wanted to capture this moment in my painting style. For me the focus is on the birch trunks with their striking structures. The cool blue-violet background forms a strong contrast to the warm yellow tones of the last autumn leaves. When painting it was important to me to make these contrasts visible and to preserve the tranquility of the situation. In “Autumn Among the Birches ” I recount a simple peaceful moment in the forest which I have translated into my own interpretation in terms of color form and surface based on the photo.
