Ayyubid Sultanate. al-Adil I (1196–1218 AD). Damascus mint. Dirham (Silver, 22.8 mm, 2.72 g). Obv: الإمام / الناصر لدين / الله أمير / المؤمنين. “The Imam al-Nasir li-Din Allah, Commander of the Believers.” Rev: الملك / العادل أبو بكر / بن أيوب / سيف الدين. “The Just King Abu Bakr, son of Ayyub, Sword of the Faith.” Reference: Album, Checklist of Islamic Coins, 803. Al-Adil I, younger brother of Saladin, ruled the Ayyubid Sultanate from 1196-1218 AD. After Saladin’s death, he overcame rival heirs, secured Egypt in 1199 AD, and reunited much of the realm, including Egypt, Syria, and parts of Arabia. A skilled commander and diplomat, he strengthened defenses, maintained cautious relations with the Crusaders, and introduced administrative reforms. His dirhams invoked Abbasid caliph al-Nasir and bore his titles.
