All auctions / Ethnographical / Balinese Kamasan painting on textile

Beautiful, large and detailed traditional Balinese textile painting (a so-called tabing) executed in the classic Kamasan-stiji. The cloth shows a dynamic mythological scene, probably inspired by the famous Hindu epic the Ramayana. The characters are finely depicted in the recognizable wayang-stiji, surrounded by traditional Balinese decorations and flame seas. The work is hand-painted on fabric using natural pigments and earth tones. This kind of cloth has a strong ritual and decorative value and was often used as a temple hanging. A wonderful collector's item for enthusiasts of Indonesian and Asian art. Condition: In good, authentic condition with characteristic signs of aging that suit the authenticity of the cloth (see photos for an accurate personal impression). Dimensions: 100x90 cm.
