Banks (Joseph).- Ker (Charles Henry Bellenden) Icones Pictae Indo-Asiaticae

Banks (Joseph).- Ker (Charles Henry Bellenden) Icones Pictae Indo-Asiaticae plantarum excerptae e codicibus Dom. Cattley, first edition, lithograph title and 30 hand-coloured lithograph and engraved plates, title and last plate laid down and with repaired tears, occasional minor soiling but plates protected by tissue guards and generally clean and bright, lacks rear free lilac endpaper, contemporary green half roan over cloth, rubbed and soiled, [Nissen BBI 1030; Dunthorne 163; Great Flower Books, p.62; Stafleu & Cowan TL2 3583 "...extremely rare. We have seen no copy of this edition."], folio, Moser, 1818 [some plates watermarked J. Whatman 1816 and 1817]. *** Extremely rare on the market and no complete copies of this first edition in auction records. Ker's fine plates were based on a group of drawings by Chinese artists collected by Andreas Everard van Braam-Houckgeest whilst working for the Dutch East-India Company, and later in the collection of the horticulturalist William Cattley. The work is dedicated to Joseph Banks. Provenance: Thomas Hay, CVO, VMH, who was superintendant of the Central Royal Parks, which included Buckingham Palace and 10 Downing Street, from 1922 to 1942. His collection of botanical books passed by descent to his son Roy Hay, a horticultural journalist and broadcaster, who is probably best remembered for having started the Britain in Bloom campaign. The book collection was sold after his death in 1989, his family retaining a few books.
