A particularly powerful and emotionally figurative work of art in which two human figures seem to merge completely. The embrace forms one closed, almost architectural composition in which love, security, and connectedness are central. This handmade sculpture is executed in heavy ceramic, presumably stoneware, and weighs no less than about 2.7 kg with a height of approximately 27 cm. As a result, the object, despite its compact size, has a striking monumentality. The design is distinctly Scandinavian-expressionist, with clear primitivist and naïve-expressionist features. The faces are deliberately strongly simplified and almost archaic in form: closed eyes, minimal facial features, and a serene, introspective expression. The artist thus does not emphasize likeness, but rather feeling, posture, and the relationship between the two figures. Also very characteristic is the hair, which is sculpturally built up from countless separately modeled strands of clay. Together with the warm cream-, brown-, old-pink, and purplish tones, this gives the surface a particularly rich, handmade appearance. The work is clearly signed with “BaWa” and dated “-92.” This signature is associated with the Swedish ceramicist Barbro Wahlqvist, known for sculptural ceramics and figurative objects. Specifications: *Artist: attributed to Barbro Wahlqvist. *Signature: BaWa. *Dating: 1992. *Provenance: Sweden. *Material: ceramic / presumably stoneware. *Style: Scandinavian modern, expressionist, primitivist. *Subject: embracing couple. *Height: approx. 27 cm. *Width: approx. 12.5 cm. *Weight: approx. 2,700 grams. Condition: excellent vintage condition. Because of its strong sculptural form and warm earth tones, the work fits beautifully in a Scandinavian, Japandi, wabi-sabi, Brutalist, Modernist, or eclectic interior. On a black plinth it immediately takes on the appearance of a gallery or museum object. The combination of the substantial weight, hand modeling, clear signature, dating, and strong figurative expression makes this a very decorative and collectible piece of atelier ceramics from the early 1990s. Shipping: Due to weight and fragility the sculpture is packed with the utmost care. Heads, arms, and other protruding parts are individually protected with shock-absorbing material. Shipping within 3 working days after payment, always with track & trace.
