Baron Georges Cuvier 1815 Signed Letter

One-page handwritten letter in French signed "G. Cuvier" by Baron Georges Cuvier (1769-1832), the French naturalist and zoologist whose pioneering work in comparative anatomy and paleontology helped establish the scientific study of extinction. Dated Paris, January 19, 1815, on printed "Universite Royale" stationery identifying Cuvier as Inspector of the Academy of Paris. Addressed to Monsieur Vautrin, the letter concerns educational administration, informing the recipient that the Grand Maitre has authorized the opening of a school under a September 3 decree and that an accompanying table of obligations must be fulfilled. Written during the Bourbon Restoration, when Cuvier held an influential position in French public education. Boldly signed at the conclusion. Exhibits toning, original folds, scattered staining and minor edge wear. Estimate $200 - $400
