Bartolomé Esteban Murillo painted two major works that stand out within the iconography of the Virgin of Sorrows, both conceived in his period of artistic maturity (around 1660–1670) and under the devotional ideals of the Counter-Reformation. It is well executed by the artist; it presents some flaws, as does the frame, which also has some flaws; it is gilded and from the period.
