Belgium - Antwerp; Nicolas de Fer (1646 – 1720) - ANVERS

Splendid and detailed geopolitical map and city plan of the city of Antwerp, engraved on copper in 1705 by the royal geographer Nicolas de Fer (1646–1720). The plate, numbered 10 in the upper right corner, comes from the famous editorial work L'Atlas Curieux ou Le Monde représenté dans des cartes générales et particulières, published in Paris at the Île du Palais. The work accurately illustrates the fortified morphology of Antwerp during the period of the Spanish Netherlands, highlighting the majestic walled bastioned circuit of the city and the imposing pentagonal Citadel located to the south of the urban center. The map is not limited to the urban fabric but extends to the territory of the Lordship of the Holy Roman Empire, showing the bend of the Scheldt River, the canals, the neighboring villages such as Borgerhout and Berchem, and the division between the territories of Brabant and Flanders. In the lower left part stands a sumptuous and elegant Baroque cartouche topped by a double-headed eagle, containing the title and the editorial information of the author. At the center of the lower section is a detailed alphabetical legend (from A to Z) identifying the monuments and strategic structures of the city, including the historic gates, bastions, and the renowned Cathedral. An exemplar of very high cartographic quality and notable decorative value, ideal for enthusiasts of military architecture and 18th-century Flemish cartography. The map is sold accompanied by a descriptive text plate consisting of only text. Dimensions 26 x 41 cm Will be shipped by courier
