Belgium - Tournai; Matthäus Merian il Vecchio (1593 –...

Magnificent, rare, and sharp horizontal panoramic view in line with the horizon of the historic city of Tournai (indicated with the ancient German toponym "Tornick"), carved and published by the famous Swiss-German master Matthäus Merian the Elder (1593–1650) in Frankfurt am Main. The plate is based on a preparatory drawing by the renowned Flemish artist Jan Peeters, as evidenced by the signature etched in the lower right corner "Iohan Peeters delin.", and was included among the monumental chorographic works of Merian's workshop such as the Topographia Germaniae or the Theatrum Europaeum. The engraving describes with absolute mastery and fineness of burin the unmistakable and majestic profile of the city laid along the Scheldt River, dominated by the famous five bell towers of Notre-Dame Cathedral and the mighty Belfort. The urban core is entirely enclosed by imposing medieval bastioned walls, interspersed with massive defensive towers and fortified gateways that reflect in the water-filled moats. In the foreground, the rural and river landscape beyond is animated with great realism by figures of pedestrians on foot, dogs, and boats, imparting notable depth to the perspective of the scene. The specimen is presented in an exceptionally superb state of preservation, with a crisp inking, excellent contrast in chiaroscuro, and wide original margins untouched. A piece of art and history of the highest collectible value, perfect for lovers of Flemish historical cartography and old city views of Europe. Dimensions 16 x 37 cm It will be shipped by courier
