BELL (GERTRUDE LOWTHIAN), THE DESERT AND THE SOWN; hardback book, published by William Heinemann, London 1907, with frontispiece in colour by John Sargeant, with many illustrations, rough cut pages and folded map of Syria enclosed in the back pocket. Additional information: The inside cover has a personal bookplate that was used by the British writer Lucy Violet Hodgkin (1869-1954), author of 'A Book of Quaker Saints'. The opposite side has the basic bookplate for John P. F. Fletcher, no. 4820, with a pencil-written note reading 'Lent to J. P. Fletcher Wormwood Scrubs September 1918'. John Fletcher was a British Quaker, prominent anti-militarist and social activist, best known for serving as the president of the Christchurch Anti-Militarist League. He was a vocal opponent of compulsory military training and during WWI his pacifist convictions led him to be imprisoned in England as a conscientious objector. His writings and activism on these issues were recognised internationally and his anti-conscription arguments were published in pamphlets such as 'Conscription in Australia'. There is a known friendship between Lucy Hodgkin and John Fletcher. Condition Report, Condition Report, No condition report has been requested on this lot.
