Belle Doxx - Redemption

Centered is a skull with crossed bones, rendered in loose, direct lines. Beneath it is the word “Redemption.” The combination of death symbolism and the idea of redemption creates an immediate tension between guilt and liberation, the past and recovery, destruction and a new beginning. Where the skull traditionally refers to transience and mortality, it takes on a different charge here. Within the context of Redemption it can be read as a symbol for leaving behind an old version of yourself. It is not the end that is central, but rather what becomes possible afterwards. The sober, almost monochrome composition strengthens that message. Belle Doxx uses few visual elements, giving each mark more weight. The hand-drawn lines, the slight imperfections and the visible texture of the canvas give the work a personal and unpolished character. Within Belle Doxx’s oeuvre Redemption aligns with recurring themes such as identity, guilt, ego, good and evil, transformation and self-acceptance. The work suggests that redemption does not necessarily mean the past disappears, but that you learn to live with it.
