A painting of notable historical and artistic charm, expression of nineteenth-century Italian painting, which combines technical quality, compositional elegance, and collectible value. The absence of a reserve price represents a privileged chance to acquire a work with potential investment interest, under conditions determined solely by competition among bidders. An opportunity not to be underestimated for collectors, enthusiasts, and investors attentive to the market of antique and nineteenth-century art. The painting depicts one of the most intense moments of the Passion of Christ: the prayer in the Garden of Olives, immediately before his arrest. The scene is constructed through a diagonal composition, in which the figure of Jesus, kneeling on the right, addresses the angel appearing among the clouds on the left. Christ, depicted with a deep red tunic and a wide blue-green cloak, expresses through his downcast face and outstretched arms a feeling of deep suffering and acceptance of the divine destiny. The angel, suspended among the clouds, holds a cup, a clear symbolic reference to the Passion and the imminent sacrifice. Particularly evocative is the contrast between the bright sky, characterized by yellow-ochre tones, and the gray and brown masses of clouds that envelop the figures, creating an atmosphere of strong dramatic intensity. The scene, even in its simple compositional form, effectively conveys the relationship between the human dimension of suffering and the spiritual dimension of divine consolation. 3. Stylistic analysis The work presents a painterly language of academic matrix, traceable to the Italian religious tradition of the nineteenth century. The definition of volumes, the theatrical arrangement of the figures, and the use of a strongly contrasted light recall models of sacred painting from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, reinterpreted according to a nineteenth-century sensibility. Of particular interest are the rendering of the drapery, the attention to expressive gestures, and the treatment of the cloud masses, used as narrative as well as scenographic elements. Biographical framing of the artist Benedetto Musso was born in Laigueglia in 1835 and died in the same town in 1883. Initially trained under the guidance of his father Giuseppe, he continued his studies at the Ligustica Academy of Fine Arts in Genoa, where he was a pupil of Giuseppe Isola. His early work reflected his academic training, showing interest in historical, literary, and religious painting. He later approached the naturalistic researches of the Ligurian Gray School, distinguishing himself for his attention to light and tone values. He participated in the exhibitions of the Society for the Promotion of Fine Arts of Genoa from 1864 to 1882. It is particularly significant, for comparison with the examined painting, that the General Catalog of Cultural Heritage documents religious works by Musso, including the Sacred Heart of Mary of 1865 and Christ and the Samaritan Woman. These precedents confirm that sacred painting indeed fell within his production. Condition report Preliminary examination: Support: The work is executed on cardboard. Painted surface: A widespread and fine network of craquelure is observed, particularly noticeable in the dark areas of the background and in the drapery. There are also slight abrasions and surface marks compatible with the aging of the work.
