Ring Black Chalama Opal / new In 925. Sterling silver set 9.7 mm x 5.4 mm Weight: 1.68 g / 8.4 ct New and unworn Ring size: U 54 UK N US 6.8 FR 14 Inner diameter: 17.2 mm Black opals occur, just like their differently colored counterparts, as spherical to knobby masses without detectable crystal structure. Their beauty usually reveals itself only when this material is polished. Characteristic of this form of opals is their opalescence, which appears as an intense rainbow play of color. Additionally, the host rock of the opal here is dark, gray to black, which gave it this name. Black opals form, like other opals, from silica-rich fluids that crystallize in sedimentary or volcanic rocks. Their characteristic shimmer is due to water inclusions inside the mineral.
