Antique Chinese Mah-Jong – Kirby, Beard & C° Paris / Chad Valley A beautiful antique Chinese export Mah-Jong set, most likely marketed in Europe during the 1920s, presented in its original five-drawer wooden case. The accessories accompanying the set bear the markings Kirby, Beard & C° – Paris and Calculateur Chad Valley, characteristic of its distribution on the European market. Contents The case contains: * 150 tiles in total * 144 tiles corresponding to the traditional game + 6 additional/spare tiles * Circles, Bamboos and Characters suits * Winds and Dragons * Finely engraved Flowers / Seasons * Scoring sticks * Dice and game accessories * Wind direction marker * Vintage Chad Valley / Grand Mah-Jong scoring calculators * Wooden case with 5 drawers * Brass fittings, carrying handle and drawer handles Bone & Bamboo Tiles The tiles feature the traditional construction found in antique Chinese Mah-Jong sets made for export: a light-coloured, engraved and hand-coloured face mounted on a bamboo back. The face material is generally identified as bone on sets of this type, and its appearance is consistent with this identification. However, no professional material analysis has been carried out. The engravings also include Western numbers and letters, characteristic of sets intended for the European market. Case A very attractive wooden carrying case with five drawers, a top handle, reinforced corners and decorative brass fittings. The case also bears the markings: W. Chang Made in China It displays an attractive patina and signs of use consistent with its age. Dating The set can be attributed to the first half of the 20th century, most likely the 1920s. The presence of the Kirby, Beard & C° / Chad Valley accessories is particularly interesting in placing the set within its Franco-British context. The dating nevertheless remains indicative, as no original documentation or professional appraisal is available to establish a precise date.
