Gautama Buddha, commonly known as the Buddha (also called Siddhattha Gotama, Siddhārtha Gautama or Buddha Shakyamuni), was a Śramaṇa who lived in ancient India (ca. 5th to 4th century BCE). He is regarded as the founder of the world religion Buddhism and is revered by most Buddhist schools as a savior, the Enlightened One who rediscovered an ancient path to let go of attachment and desire and to escape the cycle of birth and rebirth. He taught for about 45 years and built a large following, among both monks and laypeople. The Buddha was born into an aristocratic family of the Shakya clan, but ultimately gave up worldly life. According to Buddhist tradition, he awoke after several years of begging, meditation and asceticism to insight into the mechanism that keeps people trapped in the cycle of rebirth.
