Bookends (2) - Marble, Ceramic - Lamassu bookends.

Pair of Assyrian lamassu bookends: hand-painted terracotta on marble, 20th century. A decorative pair of bookends with winged, human-headed protective spirits (lamassu). The design is based on the monumental gate figures from the Neo-Assyrian palaces of Khorsabad and Nimrud (ca. 9th–7th century BCE). The figures are made of terracotta and hand-painted in red, green, blue, white and ochre-brown. They are mounted on an L-shaped dark marble base, making the supports sturdy and heavy. The two figures are mirror images of each other: the left one shows the lamassu from the front, the right from the side. Maker and country of origin are unknown; no marks or stamps have been found. Dimensions and weight (per piece): Width: 17.5 cm Height: 18 cm Depth: 9.5 cm Weight left: 3,190 g Weight right: 3,480 g Total: 6,670 g Good vintage condition with signs of wear. Small broken pieces and paint wear are visible, including on the nose. The back of the marble plates is roughly finished. The supports stand/stay stable. See the photos for details.

Estimate:£16.67
