Boston, Massachusetts Haymarket Square Bank. 18xx $500. PCGS Currency

Boston, Massachusetts Haymarket Square Bank. 18xx $500. PCGS Currency Very Fine 20. Remainder. No. None. Plate E. Chartered thanks to the efforts of Samuel A. Way in 1850. The Haymarket Square Bank was nonetheless doomed from the start according to the Whitman Encyclopedia of Obsolete Paper Money Vol. 3, as Way was of "notoriously bad character" and forced to resign before banking operations could begin. Ultimately the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts forced liquidation and proportional refunds were made to those who had invested stock. Furthermore, the Whitman reference states that Proof impressions account for all surviving traces of this fraudulent institution implying that "Remainder" may not be the best descriptor for this excessively rare item from Boston. PCGS Currency comments "Hole Punch Cancelled." Estimate: $1,000 - $1,500. Provenance: From the Caine Collection. Whitman Plate Note.
