Box - Octagonal (18th century) - Pewter - Tobacco

Box - Octagonal (18th century) - Pewter - Tobacco

This exceptional neo-classical tobacco box, made in pewter between 1720 and 1760, constitutes a refined example of personal and domestic objects produced during the transition from Rococo to Neoclassicism. Conceived to preserve snuff tobacco or small quantities of high-quality tobacco, the piece stands out for the purity of its geometric shapes and for the solidity that characterizes pewter-made goods so appreciated in the eighteenth century. Its elegant octagonal body presents softly bulging profiles that add volume and visual balance, while the vertical facets structure the surface with a sober, perfectly proportioned play of planes. The lid, also octagonal, rises into a slight dome capped by a small turned knob, a solution that reinforces the architectural character of the design and recalls the balanced, rational forms typical of Neoclassical taste. The surface preserves the characteristic gray-silvery patina of antique pewter, enriched by the passage of time and by the traces of use accumulated over more than two centuries. This soft, matte tone enhances the noble simplicity of the piece, where the quality of execution and harmonious proportions deliberately replace excessive ornamentation. The fluted base provides visual stability to the whole and underlines the carefully conceived formal idea of the object. Beyond its original function, this box represents the refinement of eighteenth-century social customs, when tobacco consumption formed part of the sociable rituals of the affluent classes and the containers intended to preserve it acquired notable aesthetic value. Its balanced geometry, its excellent sculptural presence, and the authenticity of its materials make this piece an attractive testament to European decorative art of the Neoclassical period, ideal for collectors of antique pewter as well as lovers of eighteenth-century decorative arts. Certified shipping and careful packing.
