All auctions / Asian Art / Boxwood Netsuke Snail on a Leaf

A boxwood netsuke that features a snail traversing a textured, veined leaf. Carved with exceptional attention to naturalistic detail, the piece showcases a prominently coiled snail shell resting atop the ruffled contours of a decaying autumnal leaf, complete with deeply incised branching veins on both sides. The boxwood possesses a rich, warm honey-brown to reddish-orange patina, accentuated by dark-stained detailing within the recessed grooves to create a sense of lifelike depth. On the underside, the leaf's central stem naturally frames two cleanly bored himotoshi (cord holes) of slightly asymmetrical size, designed to accommodate the silk cord without disrupting the toggle's organic contours.
