This antique Japanese boxwood men-netsuke is a masterclass in theatrical miniature carving, featuring two contrasting Noh masks sculpted back-to-back. The primary face depicts a fiercely rendered Hannya mask, capturing the intense fury of the legendary female demon with bulging eyes, sharp fangs, and sweeping horns. Turning the piece reveals a stark dramatic contrast in the Okame (Otafuku) mask, which represents mirth and good fortune through her signature plump cheeks, narrow smiling eyes, and a wide-open laughing mouth. Carved from dense boxwood, the compact toggle boasts a highly polished, rich honey-brown patina with dark-stained accents that sharply accentuate the emotional tension of both theatrical countenances. Dimensions: 1"W x 1.5"H Country of Origin: Japan Weight: 0.3 oz Condition Request Condition Report Good. One inlaid eye is missing.
