In 1806, Lauderdale was appointed by the British government as a special envoy to Napoleon’s court in Paris, where he participated in unsuccessful negotiations aimed at ending the War of the Third Coalition. He conferred directly with Talleyrand and other French officials, but the mission ultimately failed, largely owing to Britain’s refusal to accept France’s growing dominance on the Continent. His experience in Paris left him deeply sceptical of Napoleon’s ambitions.
