"A Family on the Roadside" Antique Historical Oil Painting Wonderful Work (from the artist around) by the Scottish painter Erskine Nicol signed from 1860/80 years Erskine Nicol RSA ARA (1825 – 1904) was a Scottish figure and genre painter. He was born on 3 July 1825 in Leith as the eldest son of James Main Nicol and his wife Margaret Alexander. His father rented a property on Lochend Road and worked at a wine merchant (Wauchope & Moodie) at 133 Constitution Street. The family moved in the 1830s to Fife Place on Leith Walk. After an initial education as a decorator he turned to art. He was a student at the Trustees' Academy at Picardy Place in Edinburgh, where he studied under Sir William Allan and Thomas Duncan. After completing his studies he initially taught as an art master at the old Leith High School. Nicol taught from 1845 to 1850 in Dublin, Ireland, at the height of the Irish famine, and identified with the oppression of the Irish people and with a large portion of his works in which he depicted the injustices suffered by the Irish population in the 19th century. As well as everyday Irish life he returned to Edinburgh in 1850. He lived at 1 Blenheim Place, a beautiful Georgian apartment at the upper end of Leith Walk. He was elected Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1851 and made a Academician in 1859. Nicol exhibited at the Royal Academy and was elected Associate of the Royal Academy in 1866. He also exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy and the British Institution. In 1862 he left Edinburgh and moved to St. John's Wood in London, then in 1864 to 24 Dawson Place in West London. He also bought a studio in Clonava, County Westmeath, Ireland, and there he liked to prepare canvases, until health problems forced him to reduce his travels. Subsequently he used a disused church in Pitlochry to complete his works. He died on 8 March 1904 at The Dell, Feltham in Middlesex. He is buried with his second wife in Rottingdean. In 1905 the Royal Scottish Academy organized a memorial exhibition.
