BRITISH SCHOOL (CIRCA 1800) PORTRAIT OF WILLIAM KEITH ELPHINSTONE AND JAMES DRUMMOND ELPHINSTONE Oil on canvas With later identifying inscription (upper left) 110 x 85cm (43¼ x 33¼in.) Provenance: By descent in the family of the sitters to the present owner The present sitters were the sons of William Fullerton-Elphinstone (1740-1834), who served as chairman of the East India Company. James Drummond Buller-Fullerton-Elphinstone (1788-1857) married firstly Diana Maria Clavering (1801-1821), daughter of Charles J. Clavering on 30 September 1820. He later married Anna Maria Buller, daughter of Sir Edward Buller, 1st Baronet, on 25 February 1824. They had eight children, including William Elphinstone, 15th Lord Elphinstone. William George Keith Elphinstone (1782-1842) was the commander of the British Army garrison in Kabul, Afghanistan during the First Anglo-Afghan War. He died as a captive after being captured during the 1842 retreat from Kabul.
