Type of jewel: Sapphire and diamond bar brooch. Condition: In well-preserved condition, especially given this brooch’s age. Style: Early 20th-century elegance, with three oval blue sapphires and two diamonds arranged symmetrically along a slender openwork bar. Era: Circa 1920. Material: 18ct yellow gold (touchstone tested), with additional silver appliques. Diamonds: Two old mine-cut diamonds with an estimated combined weight of 0.40 carats, colour H–J and clarity VS–SI. Diamond weights, colour and clarity are approximate, as the stones were assessed in their settings and were not removed for grading or weighing. All diamonds in this brooch were individually tested with the Magilabs' EXA Natural Diamond Detector and identified as natural diamonds. Gemstones: Three oval faceted blue sapphires, probably natural, with an estimated combined weight of 1.10 carats. Gemstone weights are approximate, as the stones were assessed in their settings and were not removed for weighing. It is common practice for gemstones to be treated in order to improve their colour or clarity. The sapphires have not been tested for such treatments. Traditional gemstone associations: Sapphire is traditionally associated with September and loyalty; diamond is the birthstone for April. Hallmarks: None. Dimensions: Length 5.81 cm.
