Bruce (John) Report on the Arrangements which were made, for the Internal Defence of these Kingdoms..., & An Appendix to Report on the Arrangements which were made..., signed presentation inscription from the author to Henry Dundas "I have the honor to be Sir your most obedient and faithful Servant John Bruce. Right Honorable Henry Dundas" to p.97 and manuscript ink annotations in the author's hand throughout, folding chart and engraved plate of the Thames, no title page as issued, slight offsetting to Thames plate and a few scattered spots elsewhere, light cracking at upper hinge, tree calf by I. Forsyth (book binder's ticket to front pastedown), spine with red morocco label, spine faded, rubbed and bumped, [ESTC T77289], 8vo, [printed by A. Strahan], 1798. *** An interesting association copy, inscribed and presented by the author to Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville. Bruce was tutor to Dundas’s son, Robert Saunders Dundas, and had a close connection with the Dundas family. The work itself was privately printed for government ministers in 1798, during the threat of a French invasion, and its presentation to Dundas is particularly appropriate given his prominent role in the government’s preparations for the defence of Britain.
