Bruno FERT (Born in 1971) The Absents, Sûbâ 31°47’5 N 35°7’26 E - 07.1948, The Absents, 2016 Fine Art print on Hahnemühle Ultrasmooth paper, title and date inscribed, signed in pencil in the margin 32 x 25.5 cm (40 x 50 cm) In 1948, the creation of the Hebrew state triggered the first Arab-Israeli war and the exodus of more than 700,000 Palestinians to neighboring countries. What remains today of their towns and villages emptied of their inhabitants? It is to answer this question that I went to Israel: to locate and photograph the vestiges of these vanished ghost towns swept away in the turmoil of the 1948 war. This report is a journey through time; a visual odyssey to the origins of the refugee question. These images bear witness to a pivotal moment in the history of the region whose consequences are today at the heart of current events. Bruno Fert — Documentary photographer Bruno Fert develops a deeply humanist body of work devoted to exile, to migrations and to the traversed territories. From disappeared Palestinian villages to the precarious shelters of migrants, he photographs less the event than its traces. With Passages, he continues this work along the roads of exile, revealing in the landscapes the marks left by those who strive to reach Europe. A precise and silent photograph, where the landscape becomes a bearer of memory.
