Byers, Texas. $10 1902 Plain Back. Fr. 626. First NB. Charter #8787. PCGS Banknote Fine 12. Situated to the northeast of Wichita Falls and a stone's throw from Oklahoma, Byers owes its name to Anthony Walter and George Washington Byers who operated a general store out of Sherman. Both men had acquired over 30,000 acres of land in Clay County and subdivided their ranch essentially providing the lots that became the townsite that ultimately prospered with the arrival of the railroad in 1904. In the years that followed, Byers had become a respectable town with a variety of establishments including the First National Bank (Charter# 8787) which had organized in 1907. Now this particular institution is a rare one at least in numismatic terms with just 10 non-institutional notes recorded by the National Bank Note Census including this well-circulated $10 Plain Back issued before 1924 which features signatures attributable to Cashier Leo J. Curtis and (Vice) President Robert L. Ligon that collectively do well to demonstrate the retained originality of this specimen. PCGS Banknote comments "Stained." Estimate: $1,000 - $1,500. Provenance: From the Jack Copeland Currency Collection, Part IV. Click here for certification details from PCGS Banknote.
