Byzantine Bronze Ornamental appliqué with relief...

Bronze Byzantine ornamental plaque with vegetal relief decoration and possible gold remnants – 6th–8th centuries CE. Culture: Byzantine Proposed period: 6th–8th centuries CE Material: Bronze with possible traces of gilding. Dimensions: 54 × 45 × 26 mm. Magnificent bronze ornamental plaque, attributed to the Byzantine sphere, with an elegant semicircular profile and rich relief vegetal decoration, characterized by the harmony of its composition and the delicacy of its ornamental elements. The piece presents a slightly convex frontal surface, framed by a thick semicircular edge and decorated with an elaborate symmetric composition of stylized vegetal motifs, lanceolate leaves and teardrop shapes, arranged around a prominent central element. What stands out is the richness of its surface, where attractive gilded tones can be appreciated, possibly corresponding to traces of ancient gilding, contrasting with areas of olive green patina and dark brown. This type of stylized vegetal ornamentation finds parallels in the decorative tradition of Byzantine metalwork, where floral and geometric motifs gained prominent prominence in adornment objects and personal equipment elements. Its concave back and its three-dimensional configuration suggest a possible function as an ornamental plaque, although its original use cannot be established with certainty. State of conservation: Good visual integrity, with the main decoration clearly recognizable. It shows surface wear, earthy deposits, and oxidations characteristic of its archaeological state. An attractive piece of ancient metalwork, especially interesting for its ornamental composition, its delicate reliefs, and the possible remnants of gilding that notably enrich its aesthetic presence
