Rev: ΑΛЄΞΙΟC ΔЄCΠ Ο ΚωΝCΤΑΝΤΙ. Each holds a labarum: the emperor in his right hand, the saint in his left. Reference: Sear, Byzantine Coins and Their Values, type 2011. Manuel I Comnenus pursued ambitious diplomacy and warfare, making his reign a final high point of Comnenian power. Under Alexius III Angelus-Comnenus, fiscal exactions and military neglect deepened the state’s weakness; his flight before the Fourth Crusade marked the collapse of effective imperial authority. Their issues link imperial decline with enduring claims to Christian legitimacy through Christ and St. Constantine.
