Manuel I Comnenus pursued ambitious diplomacy and warfare, making his reign a final high point of Comnenian power. Under Alexius III Angelus-Comnenus, fiscal exactions and military neglect deepened the state’s weakness; his flight before the Fourth Crusade marked the collapse of effective imperial authority. Their issues link imperial decline with enduring claims to Christian legitimacy through Christ and St. Constantine.
