Eastern Mediterranean or Near East, Byzantine culture. A matched pair of substantial gold earrings in a high-purity 19K to 20K alloy with 13% to 14% silver content. Each is shaped as a flattened crescent or basket-shaped body with a tapering wire suspension hook. The faces carry filigree of coiled wire volutes, bordered above and below by twisted rope wire. Clustered granules punctuate the spirals, and a row of larger beads lines the outer rim. Lunate and basket earrings of this type circulated from the Byzantine provinces into the medieval Islamic east, where spiral filigree and applied granulation persisted for centuries. Item # 205239
