Camel Caravans in the Desert - Zheng Junli - China

Zheng Junli (b. 1957) is an important contemporary Chinese figure painter. He spent much of his career teaching at Guangxi Arts University and undertook advanced studies in figure painting at the China National Academy of Painting, then under the Ministry of Culture. His artistic practice is centered on Chinese figure painting, with particular emphasis on both gongbi (meticulous) and xieyi (freehand) traditions. He has also devoted sustained attention to ethnic minority figures, regional cultures, and the representation of people in everyday life. Since the 1980s, his works have been exhibited in numerous National Art Exhibitions and major academic exhibitions, and have been collected and displayed by institutions including the National Art Museum of China, the China National Academy of Painting, and the Great Hall of the People. Zheng Junli’s artistic language is grounded in rigorous academic training and the traditional techniques of Chinese ink painting, while at the same time reflecting a distinctly contemporary sensibility. Rather than remaining bound by the established conventions of traditional figure painting, he explores new possibilities for the genre through highly distilled forms, expressive lines, the interplay of ink and color, and the rhythmic relationship between figural forms and expansive areas of ink. Art criticism has also noted that his distinctive freehand figure-painting language developed through sustained engagement with life and extensive sketching and fieldwork in ethnic minority regions. Camel Caravan in the Gobi Desert exemplifies these characteristics. The work depicts figures and camels travelling across an expansive desert landscape, with several camels carrying riders and their belongings as they move through the vast, barren terrain. Rather than rendering the desert in meticulous realism, Zheng employs washes of varying tonal density to convey the volume and movement of the camels, while touches of ochre-brown, vermilion, and blue enliven the figures’ garments, allowing the human forms to emerge naturally from the weight of the surrounding ink. The overlapping arrangement of camels and figures creates a strong rhythmic structure, while scattered ink splashes and spontaneous brush marks evoke the sensation of windblown sand and reinforce the expansive, atmospheric quality of the landscape. Perhaps most striking is the relationship between figure and environment. Zheng does not isolate his figures against a passive background; instead, people, camels, baggage, and desert are integrated into a unified pictorial whole, making the journey itself the central narrative of the composition. The title Camel Caravan in the Gobi Desert carries a further metaphorical resonance: the camel is not merely a means of traversing the desert, but becomes a “vessel” carrying people, their lives, and their hopes across an immense and inhospitable landscape. Within this vast expanse, the human figures appear small, yet through their vivid touches of color and quietly animated presence, they become the spiritual center of the composition.
