Maltese school. A watercolour and pencil on paper of the "Brig Scofield, Whitby, John Walker Commander Leaving Malta 1846". The Walker family owned a fleet of merchant ships that sailed from Whitby to London in the early 19th century. Of interest, Captain James Cook, famed explorer and cartographer, lodged with Captain John Walker as an apprentice in Whitby. This painting was brought to Canada by a member of the Walker family (another John Walker) in 1962. Signed, "Cammillieri", lower right, likely Maltese artist N. S. Cammillieri, who was a known ship portrait artist of the time. Mounted in the original burl walnut veneer frame. Marked, "Brig Schofield & Whitby - John Walker Commander leaving Malta 1846". Marked, with additional details, verso.
