Splendid and monumental Chinese canopied bridal bed with alcove (also known as a cabin bed), dating from the late 19th century (late Qing Dynasty). This extraordinary piece of oriental antique is not a simple bed, but a true “room within a room,” a miniature architectural masterpiece that historically constituted the centerpiece of a bride’s dowry in wealthy families. The furniture is entirely carved from solid wood (typically elm or hard woods of the Asian tradition), finished in the classic and prized Chinese red lacquer with spectacular decorations in gold leaf and polychromy. The structure and alcove: The front part serves as an antechamber or covered veranda (alcove), historically used to welcome intimate visitors or to place a small tea table. Access to the sleeping area behind is framed by a scenographic arch. The carvings: The upper frieze and the front panels are masterfully hand-carved in high relief and pierced. They depict court scenes animated by figures, floral motifs, grapevines, and traditional symbols of prosperity, harmony, and fertility.
