The Cardhu 15 Year Old – The Manager's Dram (1989) is a highly rare single malt whisky that was originally bottled exclusively for the employees and managers of Scottish Malt Distillers (SMD), a predecessor to Diageo. The concept behind "The Manager's Dram": - Staff perk: the series was launched in the late 1980s as an exclusive extra for staff and distillery managers within the parent company, United Distillers (now Diageo). - Not for retail: the bottles were never available for sale to the general public. At the time, employees could only purchase them for personal consumption, subject to the condition that the bottles could not be resold or opened until after they had left the company. - Cask Strength: this specific Cardhu from July 1989 is aged 15 years and was bottled at cask strength—a potent 63.0% ABV. With its massive cask strength of 63.0% ABV and maturation in refill casks, the Cardhu 15 Year Old – The Manager's Dram (1989) differs completely from the standard, smooth 40% Cardhu found in shops. Connoisseurs and whisky experts describe this rare profile as a "powerful Lowlander on steroids"—intense, oily, and malty. Nose: - First impression: very powerful and spirited due to the high ABV; there is an immediate, distinct aroma of malt, vanilla, and white wine. - Deeper notes: notes of white fruits (such as apples and pears), combined with a distinctive industrial/classic edge of floor wax and varnished wood. - With water: a few drops of water temper the alcohol and bring out typical Speyside characteristics, such as fresh citrus. Taste - Texture: full-bodied, rich, and oily (viscous) in the mouth. - Flavor profile: surprisingly sweet at first; notes of apple, vanilla ice cream, butter, and waffle come through. - Spiciness: the intensity soon breaks through with a solid kick of white pepper, slightly charred notes, and a tingle reminiscent of soda water; a subtle hint of peat/smoke can be detected in the background. Finish - Length: long, warm, and intense. - Aftertaste: the spices and pepper intensify but go hand in hand with a lingering sweetness and caramel; connoisseurs often consider this the best part of the dram.
