Private Collection, Raleigh, North Carolina Former Collection of Duke Arts and Health, Duke Hospital, Durham, North Carolina Caroline Vaughan was a North Carolina photographer known for black-and-white landscapes, studies of the human form, still lifes, and intimate portraits. While studying at Duke University, she trained with photographer John Menapace and co-founded Latent Image, the university’s first student publication devoted to fine-art photography. She later studied with Minor White at MIT. Vaughan worked extensively with a Deardorff view camera and employed processes including platinum, palladium, and gelatin silver printing, bringing a rigorous attention to tone and composition to her photographs. Her work is held in collections including the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, North Carolina Museum of Art, Nasher Museum of Art, and Gregg Museum of Art & Design, which also houses the Caroline Hickman Vaughan Archives. Few minor, scattered scuffs and nicks; toning to mount around border.
