A remarkable antique Indian wooden chest, probably Gujarat/Kutch, from the second half of the 19th century – with a professional appraisal report. Beautiful and highly characterful wooden chest measuring approximately 105 × 45 × 45 cm (L × W × H including legs). The chest is richly adorned with hand-carved geometric and floral motifs, combined with metal plates, bands, rivets and large ring handles. It rests on a low wooden base. The chest has a beautiful authentic, well-worn appearance with visible signs of age and use. There are, among other things, cracks from drying, wear, discolorations and oxidation of the metal. The chest has not been re-restored or refurbished. Professionally appraised The chest was assessed on September 19, 2026 by Drs. P.J.J. de Bruijn of Asian Arts Consultancy, specializing in Asian art. In the appraisal report the chest is attributed to Western India, probably Gujarat/Kutch, and is said to be related to the so-called Malabar chest. The dating is considered to be the second half of the 19th century to around 1900. The value determined by the appraiser in the open market is €800. The original appraisal report is available.
