[CAYLUS (Count of)]. *Les Écosseuses, or Les Œufs de Pâques*. Troyes, Veuve Oudot, 1739. In-12, brown morocco, Jansenist style, interior lace, edges gilt on marbled paper (David). First edition of this collection of jokes and other bawdy works composed by members of the Société du bout-du-banc, who gathered for merry dinners at the home of the actress Jeanne-François Quinault. Among the guests were the Count of Caylus, considered the society’s literary director, the Countess of Verrue, Vadé, Maurepas, Montesquieu, and others. It was published as a follow-up to *Les Étrennes de la Saint-Jean*, as indicated in the publisher’s notice. It includes the famous prose comedy *Le Porteur d’eau, ou les Amours de la ravaudeuse*.
