Central European School, circa 1600 and later Portrait of a nobleman

oil on panel, 46 x 33cm; framed 60 x 46.5cm, Amusingly, the gentleman in this painting is undoubtedly the same as found in a portrait which sold at Pforzheim, Kiefer, 11 February 2026, lot 3591. That painting, attributed to Alonso Sánchez Coello (1531-1588) and showing the exact same facial features as the man in this picture, shows that this example must have been repainted at a later date to represent Francis Bacon in his Chancellor's robes. Condition Report, Condition Report, Slight bowing to the panel. Craquelure. Spots of retouching can be seen to the upper right edge. Some shallow chunks have been removed from the panel verso and there is some evidence of historic woodworm. Not examined under UV light, for a full report please contact the department.
