Centre table - Wood, Marquetry

Center Table from Sorrento in Walnut Burl with Refined Figurative Inlays – Mid-19th Century Important center table of high Sorrentine craftsmanship, dating to the mid-nineteenth century, a fine expression of Italian artistic cabinetmaking of the 1800s. The furniture stands out for the extraordinary decorative richness of the top, entirely veneered in walnut burl with warm natural tones, embellished by elaborate figurative inlays made with different wood species. The top, with a distinctive polylobed shape and harmoniously undulating profile, features a refined decorative composition organized around a central circular medallion depicting a suggestive rural landscape with architectures, figures and wayfarers. Around the medallion six shaped panels on a dark background unfold, each enriched with genre scenes inspired by peasant and rural life, with characters, animals and bucolic settings, including a delicate representation of female figures engaged in daily activities. The complex marquetry work skillfully uses the different tones and natural grain of the woods, creating refined effects of depth, chiaroscuro, and painterly realism. Fine geometric fillets delimit the decorative compositions, further enhancing the contrast between the walnut burl and the lighter woods used for the depictions. The top rests on an elegant central turned support, characterized by bulging elements and overlapping moldings that give movement and energy to the structure. The tripod base features three curved and shaped legs, enriched with volute terminals, completing the refined and balanced aesthetics of the piece. The harmonious proportions, the particular contouring of the top, and the remarkable quality of the inlays testify to the sophistication of the Sorrentine cabinetmaking tradition, celebrated for its refined figurative compositions in polychromic woods. A center table of great historical and decorative charm, an authentic expression of nineteenth-century taste, ideal for elegant living rooms, representative spaces, historic homes, or prestigious antique collections.
